Omegle: Random Chat

Some time last year, I was browsing through MSN.com and one of the articles caught my eye. I don't remember exactly what the title was but it was something like "Top 10 websites to check out when you're bored." I went through the list and found Omegle to be one of them.

I checked it out and found that it was a website that pairs up two random people to have a chat. Once on their page, you simply click Start a Chat button and you were brought to a chat window.

On your window, you show up as "You" and the random person you are chatting with shows up as "Stranger." At any time during the chat, you can click disconnect and it gives you an option to get paired up with someone new.

What I found to be interesting (but somehow, not surprising) was the type of people that usually end up being paired with when I tried it out. Almost every time I clicked Start a New Conversation, I got paired up with someone that was asking me if I was male or female. Sometimes it was the good 'ol "ASL" (Age/Sex/Location). When asked, I would always say male, 21, some random city I thought of at that time. As soon as I've entered that I'm male, they immediately disconnect.

There was another time when "Stranger", who claimed she was "21 f", asked me if I was horny. I typed "maybe" then I disconnected.

It's very interesting how most people use this website. Either they they think they might meet someone there and "get lucky" or perhaps they just want to play out their sexual fantasies in the chatroom (cybersex is to computer as sexting is to texting).

Two people that I had mini-chats with that didn't fall under this type was one man/boy who liked his video games very much and one woman/girl who was from another country (either Sweden or Switzerland I don't remember) who wanted to move to the US to go to college and have a "fresh start."

To write this blog, I decided to check it out again, with similar results. The only change I saw from the website was that it now allowed random Webcam Chats (it was only text-based chats when I first checked it out). Since I don't have a webcam, the site would not allow me to try it out. With what I've seen people trying to do in the text-based chats, I can only imagine what they are doing with the webcam chats.

Omegle: Random Chat or something else
