'RapeLay' video game goes viral amid outrage

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/03/30/japan.video.game.rape/index.html

I read this article about a month ago, and it made me very upset. A videogame was released that is very controversial. The game allows the gamer to rape a girl out of revenge. He can lift up her skirt, assault her mum and sister, impregnate her and encourage abortion, and even have friends join in on the assault. I feel this crosses the line in videogames. As a woman, I am disgusted that anyone would find this game enjoyable or funny. Furthermore, it makes rape a game... when in reality it is a serious, horrendous crime. Yet, the game was already sold out in many stores upon its release.

What about games that involve other sorts of violence, such as shooting and killing? Murder is wrong, but how could someone argue that the rape game is worse than all the shooting games out there? Videogames are progressively crossing the line between what is wrong and what is "fun."

  1. I believe someone else already covered RapeLay in April on this blog.
