An investigation regarding Google's "Street View" mapping service, has now been turned over to the Australian Federal Police. Complaints from consumer watchdogs that Google doesn't take people's privacy seriously enough have now stemmed a criminal investigation.
Street View provides users with photographs taken by Google Cameras on the street. Authorities are concerned that people are being filmed without their consent. This has been a concern with Google since the beginning of Google Earth, and possibly even before that. But, the resurgence that the internet has made with the introduction of social networking media has brought more attention to these glaring privacy violations.
This invasion of privacy can be seen on a number of big internet websites that you may be on in your day-to-day web browsing. For instance when you log in to Facebook, the ad's you see on the side of your browser are usually directed to you through information and statistics that the website has collected about you via your profile. This data is now being translated into other sites as Facebook has now become the choice means of social networking. The same can be said about Gmail and other Google products.
Is there really such a thing as privacy online?
