This article provides the insight of Facebook's Chief Technology Officer, Bret Taylor. Taylor brings an interesting perspective on Facebook privacy issues since he is speaking on Facebook's behalf. He reminds us in his first response that:
One thing that was lost in the dialogue prior to some of our changes last week is that Facebook is a service primarily about sharing. People join our site to share with their friends. The reason you publish a photo to Facebook as opposed to saving it on your hard drive is because you want your friends to see it and comment on it and like it. Facebook isn't a service primarily about securing your information but about sharing your information, while giving users the confidence to know with whom they're sharing the information
This is point that would quell many complaints in the privacy debate. If you don't want people seeing your photo's, you probably should just save it on your hard drive and not upload it to your Facebook profile! Also, Taylor mentions that the privacy settings to Facebook are VERY extensive, and every user can personalize their own privacy settings in a matter of clicks. The whole process is pretty streamlined, as I just changed mine before finishing this post.
