Facebook as case evidence

Lawyers used to spend countless hours digging up information to help their case, nowadays they just hope onto the web. Facebook has become a source of legal evidence. Ken Altshuler, a divorce lawyer recently won his case by discrediting his client’s husband. The CNN article states that “social media stalking skills have become invaluable to the legal world.” A study released earlier this year cited a growing number of cases that used social media over the past few years. This brings to mind the question of how careful one must be when posting information. Not only do we have to take responsibility for our posted information we have to regulate what our friends and friends of friends post online.

Just the other day my cousin told me about her insane roommate who moved away suddenly claiming homesickness. The police showed up a few weeks later claiming a warrant to search the place for her. Apparently due to a comment referencing the roommate about a hit and run the police had tracked the girl for involuntary manslaughter. Careful what you post online!
