Learning on Second Life

Who says learning can't be done via teachings on second life? I recently came upon an blog entry detailing a number of ways that the virtual world of second life can actually effectively supplement a child's education. The controversy involved in this method of learning primarily hinges on peoples' diverging assumptions on what the “right” way of learning truly is. It's purely subjective, but in my opinion, I can see how this visually interactive world can actually stimulate an effective method of acquiring experience-based knowledge. The blogger mentions that in science class, you could actually virtually tour the social system: you could physically travel from place to place and get a sense of the relative distance and size of the objects. Furthermore, the blogger mentions that in “math,” students are instructed to build a business using the micro-economy in Second Life. In this lesson, students learn to be better businesspeople, and are pressured by the existence of their second life peers to create a successful product line that will interest investors. Lastly, the blogger provides an example of a lesson learned in “health class” where body image is discussed and experienced in a completely different level. The student is able to assume different body types, thin and thick, and observations can be made by examining the second life community's reactions to the student's virtual presence.
