The article above is about how this 12 year old boy, Greyson Chance, simply posted a video him covering “Paparazzi” on YouTube and gained such rapid internet fame that Ellen Degeneres had him on her show. She was so taken by the boy’s performance she started her own record label and signed Greyson as her first artist. It’s mind boggling how internet culture on YouTube can produce stardom. All it took were tons of people looking at the video, sharing it with their friends, and commenting. There are multiple artists who have gotten their start on YouTube (Justin Bieber to name one) and many others on MySpace (Lily Allen, Colbie Callait, etc.) Actually, a YouTube star in our own backyard, Joseph Vincent of UCI, was recently on Ellen Degeneres and won $10,000. YouTube stardom is a phenomenon not limited to musical artists and there are many articles such as this one: http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/digital-life-news/six-secrets-to-youtube-stardom-20100402-rj1y.html that claim to have the secrets to attaining YouTube fame. YouTube is the second only to Google in worldwide searches so it’s really no surprise such fame can be achieved so quickly.
