"New Media News": The Rise of Online Talk Shows

With the expansion of computer-driven mass media technologies like the Internet, a new pop culture term was coined to encompass the totality of interactive online communication: "New Media". What distinguishes "New Media" from traditional forms of media (newspapers, radio, TV) is not mostly because of the technological shift from 'analog' to 'digital'; rather, "new media" allows a much more open interaction and blending between its producers and consumers. The openness to any person who has the technological capacity to access New Media gives the feel of 'democratization' and public participation. Online websites like YouTube, Facebook or Wikipedia depend almost entirely on user-created content to succeed.

One new facet of New Media that has me fascinated are Talk Shows online. One of these Talk Shows is The Young Turks, a liberal online/radio program that releases news on domestic and foreign politics, is uploaded and streamed every day on YouTube. Basically, any person can go on YouTube and watch the entire show online. Being one of the earliest online Talk Shows, the Young Turks received immediate success; today, the show gets 13 million views on YouTube every month. They also claim that part of their success is due to the platform which they use to reach their audience; YouTube made publishing content with no strings attached so much easier. According to the talk show hosts, this allows them to be as candid, open-minded and realistic as possible.
