Slaying Monsters for Science - John Bohannon
I came across this article about a year ago when I was beginning my somewhat obsession with World of Warcraft. The article discusses the scientific conference held in-game by many scientists from around the country and probably world who have done research in World of Warcraft and about the guild they created cleverly named "Science". The scientists involved come from all different types of fields and are interested in different types of research, some on the socio-behavioral aspect of guilds in WoW, some on the similarities of the economies in WoW to the real world, or "meatspace" as they call it, and some on the psychological aspect of self identification in the game and how you see yourself based on your character. The article is an amazing and entertaining read, and I especially love how they ended the conference with a raid against the Alliance (whom I personally dislike a lot). Unfortunately, they all died!
