The term "meme" comes from Lamarckist biologist Richard Semon and is loosely defined as a unit of culture ideas that can be shared/presented. Add the internet into the mix and you have internet memes which are crazes and ideas that rapidly spread on the internet.
The website www.knowyourmeme.com is a database that presents the most notorious internet memes. Not only is an explanation of the meme provided but also a history lesson on its creation and reign on the world wide web. For some there are even videos going deeper into understanding the meme.
This website enforces the notion that the internet is very powerful and we must keep up with it and its own subculture. In many of the descriptions there is mention of how these internet memes have made their way into mainstream culture and its influence on our real-life language and newly formed fads. This is an implication that not only is the internet powerful but it determines the fate of our culture.
