It's Complicated Facebook Relationship Status

Ever wondered what "It's Complicated" actually means on the Facebook status? This particular status can be open to debate and interpersonal interpretation rather than its counterparts which can only be taken into account one way. Single is single, married is married, in a relationship is in a relationship but It's Complicated can mean potentially anything. I searched this and found someone was also curious about its meaning on http://pctutorial.org/internet/what-does-its-complicated-on-relationship-status-in-facebook-mean.html. This is what they wrote.
I see some of my facebook friends relationship status as its complicated. How is it different from single and in a relationship? What does it mean?

Much to my surprise, many people had commented back onto her post. Some were very nice and tried explaining what it meant to themselves while others were more sarcastic and laughed at her for not knowing the stupidly obvious answer. However, one answer caught my eye because he/she listed the many potential ways it could be in effect.
A) They are only having a casual relationship
B) They are on the verge of breaking up
C) They have only just got together
D) They just put it to deter potential love interests
E) They want to be together with but are unable to
F) They have just come out of a break up but are in negotiations about trying again

Any of these scenarios can and might be true so this is a valid and thorough answer to her question. I know it answered my thoughts on what "It's Complicated" meant and I guess I can accept the fact that there is no real one answer to it because it is open to interpretation by the individual.

  1. Interesting post! I too have always wondered the "it's complicated" label signified. And actually, the entire relationship status itself intrigues me a bit. Personally, I have always treated the issues of my personal relationships private, but with the existence of things like facebook today, an individual's private realm seems to be vanishing. I mean, isn't it a bit hurtful for someone who just broke up with their partner to see a stream of "great job leaving that jerk....go out with me now" comments? At least in the past, I could just get dumped in private!
